Defending the Debate

George Stephanopolous defends his debate questions to Greg Sargent at TPM Election Central.Stephanopoulos strongly defended his handling of the debate. He dismissed criticism that it had focused too heavily on "gotcha" questions, arguing that they had gone to the heart of the "electability" that, he said, is forefront in the minds of voters evaluating the two Dems. "Overall, the questions were tough, fair, relevant, and appropriate," Stephanopoulos argued. And he rejected the claim by many Obam

WOOHOO! It’s Friday! :) So I mentioned before that I was finally working on my very own stamp room… I’ve had some new furniture in “my room” but I haven’t been able to use any of it because I’m missing a piece and everything ties into this missing corner piece. But it’s coming tomorrow!! I’m SO excited!! I’ll finally be able to start loading up those shelves with my stamp stuff. The bad news is that my project table is on backorder (said with distaste) until JUNE! ACK! Looks like I’ll
Are You Truly Engaging Your Audience?
Fri, 18 Apr 2008 04:00:37 PDT
About a week ago I opened my mailbox to discover a booklet of coupons from Ralph’s, the grocery chain that operates here in Southern California. About 24 pages long, the booklet was filled with coupons for “green” products like organic nuts and soy milk (and — ahem — bottled water). It was printed on hard-to-recycle magazine-quality paper. I’d say that, even if I used all of the coupons in it (I cut out about half), about two-thirds of it would be tossed in the trash. The booklet’s title was “

You don't have to be a news junkie on your Curmudgeon's order of magnitude to be aware of the torrent of apology activity -- apologies demanded; apologies delivered; apologies analyzed, deconstructed, recontextualized, and dismissed -- that plagues our national discourse at this time. It's an orgy, really: public personages before the cameras, wallowing in contrition like a mud bath, in the hope that the act will prove seductive to the viewers at home. Seductive how? Well, it's politicians' ap
When Can Word of Mouth Marketing Get You In Trouble?
Fri, 18 Apr 2008 04:01:06 PDT
You know I love word of mouth marketing. I find it to be one of the purest, simplest and most rewarding ways of getting my business known. But did you know that word of mouth marketing can be illegal? According to Andy Sernovitz there’s a new bill (pdf) being introduced in the U.K. which will make some marketing practices illegal. The bill is meant to stop false and misleading marketing practices. Of course, word of mouth marketing could easily fit into that category if marketers were decepti

Earthquake!!
Fri, 18 Apr 2008 04:04:10 PDT
We do strange things in our sleep sometimes. Some people can wake up and are immediately alert, others, like the both of us, are pretty groggy at first. Early this morning, I was sleeping on my right side and off in a very deep sleep when suddenly there was pain in my left thigh. I awoke with a “WHAT. THE. HECK!!?!?” And Steve is there, “I don’t know!” Then, “the house is shaking!” He got up and ran to the window. We just kind of chalked it up to his being crazy (at least I did) and laid back d
Earthquake in St. Louis?
Fri, 18 Apr 2008 04:04:33 PDT
At about 4:35 AM Central Daylight Time this morning, I was woken up to my house getting a pretty good shake for about 10-15 seconds. While this may not be news for a good portion of my readers who probably reside in the San Francisco Bay Area, it’s certainly news when you live hear in the midwest. Admittedly, we do have the New Madrid Fault, which did have a major quake over a century ago, but tremor are a very rare occurrence, in contrast to the west coast. I lived out there for four summers a

The Ludlow Legacy At Home
Fri, 18 Apr 2008 04:07:15 PDT
The Ludlow Massacre's tiny monument off I-25 in Southern Colorado is easily missed if you don't know where to find it. Though the nearby coal mine garnered international attention in 1914 after a government militia slaughtered union organizers there, the minimalism of the memorial is predictable. History books venerate Rockefellers -- the union-busting mine owners -- and disregard agents of progress like the labor movement. But remember the parable about those ignoring history repeating it, part
